While sensitive skin care is nothing new, the number of people that seem to be suffering is on the increase. Sensitive skin is defined as skin that cannot cope with the effects of the environment or other conditions like certain materials or products that irritate it and can cause redness and sometimes swelling. Skin care products that can stop this problem or reduce the effects of it are called sensitive skin care products and labeled as such in stores.
Skin care products that help with this condition differ as there can be many factors involved as it is not a one-glove-fits-all condition. However, it is known that in most instances, the skin will not react well too any type of detergent, including soap, or other products with chemicals.
This skin damage can actually affect everyone to a greater or lesser degree and is often just a matter of personal tolerance. Where a person has skin sensitivity this will obviously become apparent more quickly than someone who does not share this type of skin condition.
The way to prevent the problem is with the formulation of sensitive skin care products and known compounds and ingredients which have shown they might be responsible for skin irritation are removed or reduced dramatically. The way to reduce the effects of the skin sensitivity is too source sensitive skin care products and make sure only these are used but if you know what area your sensitivity lies in then check the ingredients carefully to make sure there is nothing contained you should be wary of.
The rule of thumb here is, if you are unsure what to choose, purchase the ones with the least chemicals (if any), colorings or additives in them. Skin toners are also to be avoided as the active ingredient is alcohol and this will almost certainly irritate your already sensitive skin further.
If you are doing the laundry make sure you protect your hands with gloves as detergent can even cause problems for people who do not have sensitive skin and if rubber gloves also cause irritation, you can always wear cotton gloves underneath them. Another situation that causes a problem for sensitive skin is the sun so if you intend to go out in strong sunlight, you will need to apply a special sunscreen.
Dust and other atmospheric pollution can also be a problem so it is advisable to put some form of barrier or moisturizing cream on (even if it isn’t sunny), or a hypoallergenic moisturizer will do if you can’t find a specific sensitive skin care product. Use soap-free and alcohol free cleansers and cleanse your face whenever you return from spending time out doors but do not scrub or exfoliate too hard as it can cause reddishness and even inflammation.
Whenever makeup or cosmetics are used, try not to overuse or over wear them and only use makeup remover which will not cause skin irritation. Although it can be frustrating having sensitive skin, it is not the end of the world and with a little forethought it can be something that it is possible to live with day to day without too much inconvenience.
